A colonoscopy is an examination of the colon. Following the steps below will help to find, and diagnosis any problems. This procedure may be awkward and uncomfortable at first, but it may end up saving your life.

Hygiene is of the up most importance. Be sure to thoroughly wash you hands before the examination. You will want to have your patient not eat anything for 24 hours before the examination. You will also want them an enema a few hours before your exam. This will clear stool from the bowel. Be sure to complete this bowel preparation. The examination may not be possible if the colon still has stool in it.

Have the patient remove his pants and lie face down on a table. You will want to put sterile, rubber medical exam gloves on.

Lube of your pointer and middle fingers with Vaseline. The Vaseline will act as a lubricant and will help to alleviate the patient's discomfort.

Now slowly and gently insert your pointer and middle finger into the patients anus. You will want to insert the fingers into until you are about knuckle deep.

Gently apply pressure to the patents colon. You are checking for a mass, or lump. If all is right with the colon, you should not feel anything.
